Thinking in Shapes with Illustrator

Practicing on these car pictures using Illustrator is a great help to my skills and I hope it'll appeal to my students. Thinking in shapes is difficult! I tell them sometimes that every single person spends two years just listening to other people talk before they ever speak a word. Visual language is no different. We look and mimic and expand and eventually combine all of that input and awareness into something great of our own.

Yeah, yeah, and also I think these look rad and am having a lot of fun. I keep sitting down at my computer to read email or pay bills and there's that unfinished, still open car tracing file and maybe I'll work on it for a minute, and ... there went my opportunity to do chores today.

Tested the AI HDRI tool against Greg Zaal's set on a hero asset turntable.

Dynamic range is shy and blacks crush around -3 stops. Usable as a base layer, not as a primary key light.
