A Scanner Darkly
My latest studio venture was to illustrate "A Scanner Darkly" by Philip K. Dick. It's a story about an undercover cop who ends up observing himself without realizing it. His consciousness splits in half because of his drug use. This is 15" at f/11 Fujichrome 4x5. I like the way it turned out. I could have croppped it square to lose the blank area at top right, or put something else in the background. Wood paneling might be good. Labels: electronics, still life, strobe, studio
Mix light portrait
I am running with the every day project. Sometimes they are not so good, sometimes very interesting. This is 2" at f/4. You can see how the flash side of my face is sharp, but the side under constang tungsten light is slightly blurred. I think this is an interesting effect. The tungsten light is a lamp with a mesh cowboy hat covering it. The light shines through the pattern of the hat, making the beams. I had to move further from the wall and point the flash 90 degrees with a rigged bounce card (old paper and rubber band) to get the shadow to soften up. I am intrigued. Group Show
I'm happy to note that one of my pictures will be shown as part of the juried show at the Defoor Centre in Atlanta. The opening reception is on Friday, February 16 beginning at 7 p.m. I'll be in NYC for the College Art Association conference this weekend, so will not be able to make it to the opening, but you should go. I also have some work up at the Atlanta Photography Group's pin up show, up now through February 17. Labels: gallery, opening, reception, show
Flatware
I shot the silver recently with a Cambo 4x5 monorail, Fuji 64T, f/11, 1". The chrome itself looks pretty good, much better than this scan. The light was positioned above the table top behind a diffusion panel. A bounce card was placed in front, just below the camera lens. I tilted the front standard a bit to make the plate look circular. This was not as difficult as I had expected. Here's a shot of the setup.
Glasses setup
This is the only shot of the glasses setup that I was able to get out of a borrowed camera that turned out to be faulty. There was also a small gold reflector under the camera lens. Two hot lights above on either side behind the diffusion screens. Tomorrow I'll be shooting some silverware. Will likely just go with an "elegant" kind of theme, using the sterling silver, china, and maybe some candles.
